Fashion: “I’m taking my clothes off—let’s go!” Pajamas leave the bedroom and take the gala by storm

How many times have we had to get dressed in a hurry for a last-minute invitation? And how many times have we said to the person waiting impatiently outside our house, “Just a minute, I’ll get dressed and I’ll be ready!”?

Well, the good news is that the phrase has changed to: “I’ll get undressed and let’s go out!”

The latest fashion shows in Milan and Paris have established pajamas and lingerie as go-to outfits, from the bedroom to the red carpet. How is this possible? Simple: in uncertain times, when it feels like we’re sitting on a powder keg, dressing comfortably—without the constraints of tight clothes and shoes—is the most manageable solution in case of that stampede we all fear.

Until just a few years ago, people were called “weird” if they went out in pajamas and slippers! If my mother had seen me go out in a nightgown, she would have forbidden me from setting foot outside the door—she who wouldn’t let me wear pajamas at the dinner table or in front of the TV, unless I was sick! Today, however, no one bats an eye if you show up for dinner in a slip or with pajamas under your coat. And that goes for everyone, regardless of gender.

The more playful among us can opt for fluttering tulle robes and sexy black lace nightgowns, as we saw on the latest Venice red carpet with Alessandra Ambrosio and Stella Maxwell in nude Intimissimi looks. For those with a sporty or understated style, go for jumpsuits in ultralight fabric or cashmere. For those with a more classic taste, pajamas are the new key to a relaxed yet ultra-sophisticated tailored look—so much so that Dolce & Gabbana has dedicated an entire collection to them: “Pyjama Boys.”

So, is everyone coming to the pajama party? Sure. But strictly out of bed. And good night to the dreamers… no matter what time it is!
