Reducing Single-Use Plastic in Food Packaging: Another Step Forward in Munich

Following the initial measures implemented in recent years, the Principality’s government is continuing its policy to reduce single-use plastic. New regulations took effect on September 1: certain types of single-use plastic food packaging for fresh and ready-to-eat products may no longer be used. The measure also applies to certain pre-packaged products with an expiration date of less than three days—primarily those intended for use over a very limited period of time. Consumers will therefore continue to find the same products in the affected stores, but in packaging designed to limit the use of single-use plastic. However, there are some exceptions, such as for cut fresh fruit, where plastic containers will remain permitted to ensure food preservation, food safety, and the reduction of food waste.
